Exfoliation can be a good thing because it helps to speed up the removal of dead skin cells on the surface layer of the skin. However, too much of a good thing is not so good.

For example, over-exfoliation can result in dehydration, redness, itchiness, blotchiness, larger pores, and even minor scarring. I read an article about a model who had nearly flawless skin. She wanted to keep her skin nearly flawless so she had one exfoliating treatment after another.

The result? Sadly, she ruined her beautiful complexion. The lesson to take away? Do not overdo it.

I had always thought that regular exfoliation of facial skin would be beneficial. For example, it would minimize wrinkles, reduce the size of pores, stimulate cells so the skin looks brighter and more youthful, decrease the appearance of scarring, lessen lines, etc. In fact, I bought two, six-treatment microdermabrasion packages in the past and thought they went well.

Now, the literature I read cautions against over-exfoliation. It claims the skin can thin and end up looking worse than before.

Does anyone know if this is true? How much is too much?
