I completely agree concerning the need for thorough research before deciding on a medical facility and/or procedure. I have seen some pretty scary photos of people who went in for a seemingly benign laser treatment and came out significantly scarred. I would be especially investigative of medical spas that allow technicians (instead of doctors) to perform laser procedures. Gosh, most of us have enough concerns in our lives without paying to correct a problem and coming out of the ordeal with irreparable damage.

Hey RunnersHigh--

So sorry you've had such a difficult time researching procedures. Dermatology is quite an exciting field right now- new clinical trials keep popping up for lasers and skin treatments. It's very difficult to keep track of 1) what's worth the price and 2) which procedures actually work.

I recommend that you focus your time on finding the best Doctor (dermatology practice) in your area. Unfortunately many unqualified salons/spas try to get away with performing these invasive laser treatments. Always speak to a board certified dermatologist with over 15 years of experience. When making this appointment, it always helps to inform the receptionist of what you are looking for (acne treatment, scar removal, anti-aging injections) and how severe your skin problem is (are you looking for a topical cream prescription? or are you interested in laser resurfacing?). This way they can find a specialist who works in that desired field. Of course it always helps (both you and the practitioner) to contribute your own preferences/research. However, your final decision should be based on a dynamic interaction between you and your Doctor. Deciding on a laser treatment is not one-stop-shopping. Many complications/side effects may arise from these invasive procedures (from bleading, to bruising, to more scarring, even permanent disfigurement- check out the recent problems with Fraxel). Furthermore, many procedures require multiple visits and thus become extremely pricey. I find that websites tend to overlook this crucial fact- instead they simply post before/after photos, making it seem as though the procedure was quick and easy. Finding the best doctor should be your first priority. They will always be your primary source for this kind of information.

When I think of "laser treatment" I think of Star Trek/Star Wars but not necessarily of ways to get rid of my scars, acne, or other skin imperfections. However, since laser seems to be the state of the art tool to help cure eye and skin problems I became interested in exploring my options. I learned that laser treatment can be used for the reduction, revision, and removal of scars. And it gets better, people across the globe are investing resources to help people with scars even more. For instance check this link to learn more about clinical trials and research related to scars http://www.bioportfolio.com/indepth/Scars/research.html

I have found a lot of information about scar research - thanks Google - but how can I identify what new idea or treatment or tool is worth considering. What school, what professor is the leader in the field of scar research? So many options, so many questions. Need advise, please!
