I, too, have read some terrible stories about pit bull attacks, and my heart goes out to all the victims. It is apparent that this breed of dog is more active/aggressive; therefore, it seems wise to keep them away from small children. Having said all of that, some pit bulls are raised to be aggressive (or outright abused--think the NFL quarterback)), and that is never acceptable. These animals can be loving, loyal, devoted, and protective. It goes without saying that pit bulls need regular activity, they should not be couped up in an apartment or small home day after day. Still, for the right type of person who can exercise the animal, they make wonderful pets.[br] [br]Naturally, children should always be safeguarded from aggressive animals so they are not scarred for life. And, sometimes animals need to be safeguarded from humans. [br][br]

There was yet another horrific case of a small child being mangled and severely gashed on the face by a pit bull.    This one happened in Worrcester, MA.   And predictably, the owners talked about how loving and friendly the dog was.   Of course- except where the dogs unpredictable nature came to the surface, as happens all too often with pit bulls.    The 3 year old is lucky to be alive, but required over 100 stiches and his face was severely gashed.

Once when I was in the OR,  I personally witnessed the aftermath of a pit bull attack - a frail elderly woman came in, with her lower leg nearly severed from a neighbor's pit bull attack.   Bothe her fibula and her tibia were crushed.    These dogs - perhaps beacuse of selective breeding- seem to intuitively recognize the weak and the vulnerable.    Then you have a ticking timebomb...  Time to regulate pit bulls, the same way we do lead- require their removal from communities with vulnerable populations.
