It is hard to imagine the multiple scars breast cancer surgery can cause without seeing them. One courageous Australian mother (and registered nurse), Beth Whaanga of Brisbane, decided to change that through a cancer awareness project called Under the Red Dress. While there has been some backlash, it has been overwhelmed by support from across the Internet.

Yes, there is some nudity in her posts and the accompanying stories; however it is informative and cautionary, not gratuitous. Beth's goal is to encourage careful self-examination to head off breast cancer early. More self-examination vigilance can only be good. However, probably not necessary to rush out to get a mammogram given the recent news that mammograms appear no better than self-exams and may actually increase the rate of unnecessary treatment (full study here).

Scars of all kinds can be treated. Hers are fresh. Hopefully there will be some hopeful follow-up from her, showing progress with her healing.
